Abstract
SummaryThe phospholipid composition of amniotic fluid samples from 29 normal patients and 40 patients with rhesus haemolytic disease was studied at 26–36 weeks pregnant. Lower levels of phosphatidylcholine (PC) were found in cases of severe rhesus disease between 34 and 36 weeks when ‘early’ surfactant normally appears in most pregnancies. Phosphatidylinositol (PI) and phosphatidylglycerol (PG) concentrations did not differ from values in normal pregnancy. The effect of treatment for the rhesus disease (plasmapheresis, steroids alone or steroids with intra-uterine transfusion) was studied in a smaller group of patients. We were unable to demonstrate any striking effect of treatment on amniotic fluid surfactant phospholipid levels.
