Abstract
This was a prospective observational study over a 6-month period of 82 labouring women at >36 weeks who had FSBS for fetal heart rate patterns suggestive of possible fetal acidosis. The main outcome measures were failure rate of FSBS and mode of delivery in relation to cervical dilatation at which procedure was performed. A total of 82 women had FSBS carried out over the 6-month period. Approximately 5% of the annual delivery rate for the unit. FBS carried out at 2–3 cm was associated with a 100% caesarean section rate and a 33% FSBS failure rate. At 4–5 cm dilatation, there was a 60% caesarean section rate vs. 40% vaginal delivery rate. The failure rate of FSBS at this cervical dilatation was 36%. FSBS at 8–9 cm cervical dilatation was associated with a caesarean section rate of 29% vs. a vaginal delivery rate of 71%. The failure rate of FSBS at this dilatation was 37%. At full cervical dilatation there was a 13% caesarean section rate vs. an 87% vaginal delivery rate. The failure rate of FSBS at this dilatation was 75%.
