Abstract
Summary: Fetal limb malformations are frequently associated with skeletal dysplasias, exposure to teratogens, or certain metabolic disorders. Several syndromes that result from skeletal dysplasias are lethal in the postnatal period. Although detection of limb abnormalities is possible with two-dimensional (2D) ultrasonography (US), definitive diagnosis of the condition involved is seldom made before the latter part of the second trimester. In our experience, the use of three-dimensional (3D) US is not only complementary to 2D US in that it allows for a more complete assessment of fetuses with limb malformations but also allowing of possible earlier diagnosis in some cases if 3D US is routinely added to 2D fetal assessment when it is performed between 15 and 20 weeks gestation.
