Abstract

A further study of fetal blood glucose levels during labor has been made. A blood concentration of more than 2 standard deviations below the mean was defined as fetal hypoglycemia (⪕ 40 mg. per cent). This occurred in association with four conditions: fetal growth retardation, pre-eclampsia, accidental hemorrhage, and maternal hypoglycemia. Two of the 8 fetuses with hypoglycemia were stillborn. Fetal blood glucose levels were not related to fetal blood pO2 or base excess. Fetal base excess was not altered after the maternal injection of 50 Gm. glucose. The injection of glucagon 1 mg. into the fetal scalp increased fetal blood glucose levels more than maternal levels.
