Abstract

In Reply .—Dr Robinow has stated that several of the anomalies related in our report are not previously described as part of the fetal hydantoin Unfortunately, this is not the case. The defects of imperforate anus (anal atresia), rib and vertebral anomalies, a single umbilical artery, and dislocation of the hip are specifically mentioned in the two classic textbooks by Smith and Taybi as being part of the fetal hydantoin syndrome. 1,2 These defects are also acknowledged in articles cited in the reference list of our report. malformations, as well as descriptions of numerous other genitourinary abnormalities, are also listed by these and other authors. Since rectoperineal or rectogenital fistulas are classic findings in infants with imperforate anus or anal ectopia, this would be an expected occurrence in such patients.
