Abstract

Coturnix (Marks and Lepore, 1968) and chickens (Marks, 1969) fed thiouracil during the growing period had higher fertility than nontreated controls. While no improvement was observed in the fertility and egg production of adult chickens fed thiouracil (Shaffner and Andrews, 1948; Andrews and Schnetzler, 1945; McCartney and Shaffner, 1950), the thyroid gland has been shown to influence ovarian function and reproduction in other species (Weichert, 1930; Jones et al., 1946; Ershoff, 1945). Marks (1969) postulated that the beneficial influence of feeding thiouracil may be due to its action prior to sexual maturity.
