Abstract

This article attempts to show how anthropological concepts and research methodologies can be utilized profitably in investigating contemporary population phenomena in the United States. Focusing on fertility decline in the southern Appalachian region, the authors: (1) review recent attempts by social scientists to explain the phenomena, noting their limitations; (2) indicate important explanatory variables which have heretofore not been considered, due mainly to the research designs utilized; and (3) argue that the anthropological community-study approach is one way of investigating these variables. The article concludes by calling attention to the need for interdisciplinary-multiprofessional efforts in population research.
