Abstract
Although the government of India decided to include designed in the health program in 1952 the rate of population growth has not even been slowed down. At present manufacturers of contraceptives in India produce less than 1/8 of what would be needed if everyone used family planning. For the 2/3 of Indians living in villages existing contraceptive methods are unsuitable. There are not enough doctors and laboratories to make sterilization practical. The cost of oral contraceptives is prohibitive to most village women. The author believes a promising oral contraceptive may be developed which will thicken the cervical mucus and make implantation impossible. The biggest problem however is convincing villagers that family planning is a way to better health and happiness. There are many problems which must be handled with tact. Designed fertility adequate nutrition and good medical facilities are absolutely necessary to change the sickly painful existence of the villager for a healthy energetic one.
