Abstract
Most temporary contraceptive methods are reversible, with fertility returning after discontinuation of use. However, relatively little is known about the length of time that must elapse before complete restoration of fertility or about the possibly negative effects of a specific technique on the reproductive system or on the outcome of a pregnancy commencing after discontinuation. For example, is there any connection between the duration of IUD use and the date of the first conception after removing the device? Does the duration of IUD use or the period of time that elapses between its removal and conception influence the outcome of pregnancy or the type of delivery? Have these parameters any effects on the number and severity of malformations of the offspring? Is there any difference in the sex ratio or birthweight between the newborns of the previous users and nonusers of IUDs?
