Abstract

An expression for the d-band susceptibility of a transition metal has been derived in the random-phase approximation using a two-band (s and d) model Hamiltonian. A criterion for the appearance of ferromagnetism has been obtained analytically from the divergence of the d-band susceptibility. The criterion is shown to reduce to the usual Stoner criterion in the limit of zero s-d hybridisation.
