Abstract

Magnetic and optical properties of an electrochemically prepared copolymer of aniline and 5-amino-2-naphthalene sulfonic acid and effects of chemical oxidation have been studied. Temperature dependence of the electron spin resonance (ESR) spin susceptibility of the copolymer in the protonated and the oxidized forms can be expressed by the Curie-Weiss equation indicating ferromagnetic properties with positive Weiss constant of 12K. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility for the copolymer measured at 1.0kOe with a SQUID susceptometer also supports the results of the ESR measurements. Similar results have been also observed in copolymers of aniline with 2-amino-3,6-naphthalenedisulfonic acid and aniline with p-aminoazobenzenesulfonic acid.
