Abstract

Ferroelectric betaine arsenate (BA) becomes antiferroelectric by deuteration. Complete miscibility of BA and deuterated betaine arsenate (DBA) allows the growth of crystals in which the effective interaction, deciding about the transition to a ferroelectric or to an antiferroelectric state, goes to zero. Tc, however, shifts monotonically with the Dcontent, indicating that this interaction is not responsible for the transition itself. Dielectric and caloric data of some crystals with different deuteration degrees are presented.
