Abstract

Ferroelectric behavior in semicrystalline poly( β-propiolactone) was found. Remanent polarization and coercive field obtained from the D– E curve at 45°C were 90 mC/m 2 and 45 MV/m, respectively. The pyroelectric constant (about 20 mC/m 2 K) was stable at almost the melting point. Whereas the crystal structures previously reported in this polymer are non-polar, they can be transformed into a polar ferroelectric structure by an external electric field.
