Abstract

A single ferrocyanide-activated NADH cytochrome c reductase species was present in primary leaf extracts from both nitrate-treated and untreated barley plants. The enzyme had a sedimentation coefficient of 3.9 S, a Stokes radius of 2.8 nm, a calculated mol. wt of 45 000, a frictional ratio of 1.19 and an axial ratio of 3 : 1. The enzyme was not detected under conditions which led to the partial breakdown of NADH nitrate reductase to 3.1 S and 3.8 S NADH cytochrome c reductase species. We conclude that the ferrocyanide-activated NADH cytochrome c reductase species is not related to NADH nitrate reductase.
