Abstract
Italy was a backwarded country in terms of railway development; also the concepi of railway tourism was accepted later. The country was often visited by relevant flows of tourists, but Italians started travelling by train in the peninsula later than the others. In general we can assume that the dimension of railway tourism in Italy was never astonishing. At the beginning timetables and railway guides played an important role, urging the standardization of thr travel. Then the railway companies were the organizers of the first railway travrels with groups. Railway tourism was functional to a better qualita of the railway service and it contributed to insert Italy into the European railway network. After World War I the importance of railway tourism was fully recognized till the introduction of the «Popular trains» during the '30s.
