Abstract

The neutron depolarization technique is used for a simultaneous observation of the grain size and the volume fraction of ferrite and pearlite forming from austenite in a medium-carbon steel at different temperatures. The effect of the transformation temperature is mainly visible in the particle density, a property that is governed by the nucleation behaviour. Pearlite formation leads to very distinct effects in neutron depolarization, the interpretation of which, however, is not yet fully developed.
