Abstract

Stratton's method of analysing the fields inside a dielectric ellipsoid is applied to obtain what is believed to be the first systematic treatment of a general anisotropic ellipsoid. It is shown, for a medium whose permeability (permittivity) matrix has hermitian symmetry, that internal fields produced by an externally applied uniform field can be evaluated from the knowledge of demagnetizing (depolarizing) factors. It is shown also that results obtained for the isotropic case are not directly applicable to the ferrite as some workers have assumed.
