Abstract

Fer' ri.mo.nas . L. neut. n. ferrum iron; Gr. n. monas unit; M.L. fem. n. Ferrimonas iron ( III )‐reducing cell. Proteobacteria / Gammaproteobacteria / Alteromonadales / Alteromonadaceae / Ferrimonas Straight rods 0.3–0.5 × 1.2–1.5 μm with rounded ends . Occur singly, occasionally with some pairs or short chains. No resting stages are known. Definite capsules are not evident. Gram negative. Motile by means of a single polar flagellum . No intracellular inclusions have been observed. Chemoorganotroph, having a strictly respiratory metabolism with oxygen, nitrate, Fe ( III )‐ oxyhydroxide, Fe ( III )‐ citrate, and MnO 2 used as electron acceptors . Lactate is oxidized to CO 2 but not to acetate. Sodium dependent; a minimum of 0.5% NaCl is required in the medium. Catalase, oxidase, phenylalanine deaminase, DNAse, and lipase (Tween 80 and Tween 20) positive. Gelatinase, urease, amylase, Simmons citrate, arginine dihydrolase, and lysine decarboxylase negative. Growth at 42°C. Member of the Gammaproteobacteria . The mol % G + C of the DNA is : 54 ( T m ). Type species : Ferrimonas balearica Rosselló‐Mora, Ludwig, Kämpfer, Amann and Schleifer 1996, 362 (Effective publication: Rosselló‐Mora, Ludwig, Kämpfer, Amann and Schleifer 1995a, 200.)
