Abstract
Private veterinary practitioners are seeing pet ferrets with increasing frequency, and many common disease syndromes of the pet ferret require surgical intervention. This article discusses adrenal gland disease and adrenalectomy, prostatic and paraurethral cysts and their surgical management, perineal urethrostomy, pancreatic beta-cell tumor surgery, and splenectomy in the ferret. The surgical procedures are described with anatomic and physiologic information included when specific to the ferret. Indications for surgery, recomended presurgical diagnostics, and perioperative medical therapy are reviewed. Successful ferret soft tissue surgery depends on the surgeon's skill in combination with a working knowledge of ferret anatomy and the unique pathophysiology associated with the common ferret disease syndromes.
