Abstract

An explanation is offered of the political intention of Tonnies' main work, Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft, followed by a critical presentation of Tonnies' ideas about social movements and political parties and an attempt to apply his concepts to a typology of them. Maurice Duverger's typology of parties, derived from Tonnies and Schmalenbach, is analyzed. Distinction is made between sociopsychological texture types and sociological structure types, Gemeinschaft und Gesellschaft being found to fit the former rather than the latter.
