Abstract

In this work, the Fenton-like decolorization of an azo dye, Acid Red 1 (AR1) by Fe-ball clay (Fe-BC) catalyst was studied. The effects of different reaction parameters such as initial iron ions loading on ball clay (BC), catalyst dosage, initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)0 and AR1 (AR1)0, reaction temperature and initial solution pH on the decolorization of AR1 were assessed. The best reacting conditions were found to be 1.0 wt. % of iron ions loading on BC, catalyst dosage = 5.0 g L -1 , initial solution pH = 2.5, (H2O2)0 = 12 mM, (AR1)0 of 50 mg L -1 at temperature 30 °C. Under these conditions, 99% decolorization efficiency of AR1 was achieved within 180 min of reaction. The results indicated that Fe-BC was a promising catalyst for the heterogeneous Fenton system.
