Abstract

In the past few years it was recognised that frequency upconversion in presence of group velocity mismatch (GVM) and strong energy exchange between interacting pulses is an effective pulse compression method. Pulse compression by SH generation in KDP crystal for Nd laser pulses was studied in a number of papers. Compression factors of 4–5 were achieved starting with 0.5–1.2 ps pulses of Nd:glass lasers1–3. Recently 11 ps pulses of Nd:YAG laser were compressed down to 500 fs using this technique4. In a theoretical work of Stabinis et al. the conditions of pulse compression in general case of sum frequency (SF) generation were found45.
