Abstract
In this dissertation, I attempt to examine the feminine roles in the popular fairy tales and folktales. In Chapters 1 and 2,1 will discuss the feminine qualities and the feminine roles of the heroines in Western fairy tales with a view of the heroines' dreams and behaviour. The association of femininity with the female clearly indicates the gender ideology in society. The heroines are either rewarded by possessing femininity or punished by not performing the feminine roles. Besides the Western contexts, in Chapter 3 ,1 will examine the representation of female in the Chinese folktales since feminine roles may be defined differently in the Chinese culture. Then, in Chapter 4, female roles in the feminist fairy tales are presented to see how the feminist heroines break the myth of conventional gender ideology. Finally, I will conclude my dissertation in analyzing how successfully the feminism challenges the gender ideology. I would like to see whether there is any other way for females to get out of the myth of gender differences.
