Abstract

A 22-year-old gravida 2, para 1 woman presented to the emergency department (ED) with 6 hours of pelvic pain and fever that beginning 3 days after an elective abortion by dilation and evacuation at 19 weeks of gestational age. She was in moderate distress and had significant tenderness in the left lower quadrant without peritoneal signs. The vital signs were a blood pressure of 106/67 mm Hg, pulse rate of 121 beats/min, and oral temperature of 38.3 °C. Pelvic examination demonstrated an enlarged uterus, with general on observed upon bimanual examination, but no focal findings.
