Abstract

First kidney transplantation in Asia was performed in 1968 at our institution in Taiwan. We have good reputation and outcome of solid organ transplantation. In 44 yeas, there are only five qualified female transplant surgeons. Three general surgeons are involved in liver, pancreas, and kidney transplantation. One is a pediatric surgeon and performed the first intestine transplantation in Taiwan. The other one is an urologist and was involved in kidney transplantation. However, the liver transplant surgeon and the urologist have given up their transplant career because of their family life. Three active female transplant surgeons all work at Northern part of Taiwan. In Asia, surgical society is male-dominant. However, the numbers of female medical students and surgical trainees are increasing. To provide female mentors and create role models in the field of transplant surgeon is crucial for recruiting new blood. Herein we introduced current situation of female transplant surgeons in Taiwan and may create connection to other Asia countries and female transplant surgeons in the worlds.
