Abstract

This article will address two aspects of women and comedy: first, the ‘liberation’ of female comedians in B.B.C radio comedy, looking specifically at the case studies of June Whitfield and Jan Ravens as women who have found both challenges and creative success on radio. Second, it will address the role of the V&A Museum in the collecting and capturing of female comedy for historical posterity. This article has been adapted from a paper given at the ‘Women and Comedy’ symposium held by Mixed Bill at the University of Salford on 19 October 2017.
