Abstract

The number of female doctors registered with the General Medical Council has exceeded the 100 000 mark for the first time, rising by 4.7% to 104 534 in 2011. Female doctors now account for 43% of the total, and the GMC estimates that they will overtake male doctors registered in the United Kingdom between 2017 and 2022.
