Abstract
We studied the reproductive condition of adult-sized (≥1.83-m total length [TL]) female American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis) on Marsh Island Wildlife Refuge, Louisiana. The average nesting rate of 1,715 adult-sized females was 25.3±0.02 (SE)% for 1986-89. Our data, when combined with aerial nest survey and size-class frequency distribution data from Louisiana alligator populations, provided a coastal population estimate 4 times as large as previous estimates, which significantly alters estimates of the maximum allowable harvest of this commercially valuable renewable resource
