Abstract
Sleep medicine fellowships are considered by individuals close to completing (or have completed) training in: family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, otolaryngology, pediatrics, or psychiatry. The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) began accrediting sleep medicine fellowship training programs in 2005 and currently lists 71 accredited programs. Sleep medicine fellowship training started on (or after) 1 July 2009 must be accredited by the ACGME in order for the examinee to be board-eligible. After the 2011 board exam, potential examinees will no longer be able to meet training requirements through a ‘practice pathway,’ but rather will need to successfully complete 12 months of an ACGME-accredited sleep medicine fellowship program. The need for sleep medicine practitioners will likely continue to grow and will be reflected by the growth of fellowship training programs in sleep medicine.
