Abstract

After studying piano, harmony, organ and composition with his father and with Hilari?n Eslava and Rom?n Jimeno, first he assumes the post of organist of Tafalla and later on that of chapel master of Tolosa, at the same time directing the Band and the Academy of Music. Gorriti became a famous composer of sacred music, writing works for choir, organ and orchestra. He was a prestigious educator as well, having been the teacher of many renowned-to-be students. In this paper his complete organ works come to light for the first time, amounting to 25 compositions. What most attracts the attention in this organ production is the evolution undergone by Felipe Gorriti, who first writes baroque works adapted to the organ he owned in Tafalla and then progressively moves to the technical and sound characteristics of the romantic organ, winning several first prizes in the competitions held in Paris in the years 1881 to 1883, with prestigious juries including C. Franck, Dubois, Gigout, Guilmant, etc.
