Abstract

New Schiff base ligands have been piepared from the condensation of 3-formyl-4-hydroxy-1. 8-naphthyridin-2-one with o- and p-phcnylenediamine, H2L1 and H2L2. respectively. Fe(III), Ni(II), Cu(II) and UO2(VI) complexes were prepared and characterized by chemical analyses, IR, electronic and mass spectra as well as thermal analyses and magnetic measurements. The Schiff base ligands behave as mono- or dibasic letradentate ligands towards the metal cations. Different Ni(ll) complexes are obtained in similar reactions of the ligands H2L1 and H2L2 with Ni(OAc)2. 4H2O having the formulae [L1 Ni2(OAc)2] and [L2 Ni(OH2)2]2, respectively. The coordination geometries around the Ni(II) cations are square-planar for the H2L1 complex and octahedral for the H2L2 complex. The UO2(VI) cation yields a mononuclear complex with N2O2 coordinating sites with the ligand H2L1. The complexes of Fe(III) and Cu(II) give the same products for both ligands, a monemer with ligand H2L1 and a dimer with ligand H2I. 2. Magnetic moments and electronic spectral data indicate that the geometries of the Fe(III) and Cu(II) complexes are octahedral and the UO2(VI) complex is pentagonal-bipyramidal.
