Abstract

Feeding responses by larvae of the furniture carpet beetle, Anthrenus flavipes LeConte, were determined by use of a bioassay technique and statistical analysis in conjunction with various treatments of fabrics. Larvae showed a definite differential feeding response toward materials previously exposed to feeding. Also, differential response resulted which was related to the p H of the food material used in tests. Results with buffered samples showed that other factors were operating with p H. Washing treatments applied to test materials produced responses which indicated the existence of additional factors. Other than materials previously fed upon, those having less substance foreign to the fiber itself were more attractive.
