Abstract

AbstractThis chapter discusses the feeding behaviour of piglets, growing pigs, sows and boars. The topics under the feeding behaviour of piglets include the importance of colostrum, effect of the behaviour of sow on the first sucklings, nursing pattern and teat order, internursing interval, factors affecting sow milk production, non-nutritive nursings, pre-weaning intake of solid feed and water under semi-natural and commercial pig production, intake of feed and water in relation to commercial weaning. The topics under the section on the feeding behaviour of growing pigs include the methods and measurements used to describe feeding behaviour; influence of animal characteristics on feeding behaviour; feed accessibility, number of troughs and feeder design; social constraints in pigs kept in groups; and the effects of the physical form of the feed, nutrient density and ambient temperature on the feed intake. The last part of the chapter discusses the feeding behaviour of sows and boars, particularly restrictive feeding and hunger in sows, effects of housing system on sow feeding behaviour, methods to prevent the feeling of hunger in pregnant sows and feed-related diseases and injuries like stomach ulcers, torsion of abdominal organs and vulva biting.
