Abstract

Termites of the genus Reticulitermes possess unique intestinal faunules (Kirby 1937, Honigberg 1970). For example, all known species of 2 protozoan genera, Pyrsonympha and Dinenympha, are restricted to Reticulitermes, and each species of Reticulitermes harbors only selected species of these Protozoa. In addition, the protozoan, Trichonympha agilis Leidy, has been found in all species of Reticulitermes studied and is limited to Reticulitermes. Although no published accounts of the intestinal fauna of R. virginicus (Banks) are known, our observations indicate that its fauna is very similar to that of other Reticulitermes species.
