Abstract

Artificial diets prepared from juice extracted from green beans were fed to lygus bugs through a Parafilm membrane. No evidence was obtained to indicate that the membrane adversely affected the feeding behavior of the bugs. Adult males survived an average of 46 days when fed on fresh bean juice and 44 days when fed on fresh beans. A diet prepared by lyophilizing fresh beans, followed by pulverization and then recombination of the bean powder with water enabled bugs started as third-instar nymphs to survive an average of 113 clays.
