Then a job leads her to a shipping container full of kidnapped teenagers and into the crosshairs of the kidnapper, and Lori"s life goes from risky to dangerous. Lori, anxiously hiding a mysterious interdimensional presence of her own, and this group of disparate, super-powered teens, known as the Nix, quickly decide to team up to uncover why these menacing feeders are here and why no one else seems to have noticed. In this clever, reality-bending adventure rich with fast-paced references to Studio Ghibli films, Pokemon, and comic books, Lori and her friends must question everything—as the feeders obfuscate history and what"s visible in the present—all while finding the best outfits in which to fight underwater. The science fiction is sufficiently complex, while the high school archetypes remain recognizable (Lori"s the mysterious loner, and she"s teamed with a jock, a nerd, a daddy"s girl, and a kid using a wheelchair). Weekes twists and contorts expectations in this ambitious story of five special teenagers who don"t fit neatly into this dimension or the next, and the book would be a great pick any reader who feels like an outsiders.
