Abstract

The synthesis of ribosomal proteins and the assembly of ribosomes in Escherichia coli are coupled. When the rate of ribosomal protein synthesis exceeds that of ribosome biosynthesis, certain key ribosomal proteins act as inhibitors that prevent the further translation of their own mRNA. This translational feedback mechanism ensures the balanced and co-ordinately regulated synthesis of many ribosomal proteins.
