Abstract

AbstractThis chapter deals with the inadequate early feed intake in piglets and its management. The factors that limit feed intake are presented (competition for feed, temperature, gut capacity, health status, energy density, imbalanced diets, palatability and water intake). Prediction of feed intake through mathematical models (equations) is described. Intake of sow milk, intake of creep feed, feed intake during the first week postweaning, ways of enhancing feed intake postweaning, feed intake targets for the nursery period, feed efficiency and how to improve it, feed allowance budgets, feed intake under disease stress and controlling feed wastage are discussed.
