Abstract
This essay is at first a biographical narrative about the Venezuelan historian Federico Brito Figueroa. It highlights the different elements related to the methodology used by this author in the field of the social sciences in order to carry out his many investigations regarding the presence of Africans and their descendants in Venezuela in colonial period and 19th century. Brito Figueroa emphasizes the labor of enslaved Africans in agriculture and livestock production, as artisans and in domestic service. His work also focuses on their resistance or rebellion against slavery, expressed in flights, uprisings, conspiracies, formation of runaway slave communities, etc. In addition, the essay cites all of the books published by Brito Figueroa concerning slavery and the black population of Venezuela, as well as his several contributions in the field of culture and socio-ethnic mixture.
