Abstract

With its fiscal year 2003 budget approaching $4 billion, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) represents the second largest of the institutes constituting the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) “big three.” Although the institute does not represent a major source of research funding support for the house of radiology, its importance to national and global medicine, public health, and more recently biodefense warrants its inclusion for discussion in this series.
