Abstract

Since 11 September 2001, the U.S. government has undertaken efforts to tighten access to information that could be useful to terrorists. A White House official told a meeting of the National Research Council's Board on Earth Sciences and Resources, held on 17 May, that new guidelines for deciding which information should be restricted are being developed by the Bush administration.Penrose Albright, assistant director for homeland and national security in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP)said that the process for “taking information heretofore readily accessible and restricting it is not yet resolved. A memorandum for the decision‐making process is not yet thought through. But these things are being discussed in the White House and [executive] agencies.”
