Abstract

The specialty of emergency medicine has grown rapidly, partially as a result of federal programs providing insurance coverage for large numbers of formerly uninsured individuals. The specialty grew and flourished as a response to improving economic circumstances. Today, however, changes in federal reimbursement policies threaten the future viability of emergency medicine.
