Abstract

Russians’ collective ethno-cultural identity in Latvia is concentrated around the values of the Russian language in the private and public life of this ethnic group. At the same time, nation-building in Latvia is focused on the dominance of the Latvian language and culture in the public space. In reality, this is manifested not only in the differences in the legal possibilities of the Latvian identity and the identity of ethnic minorities, but also in the dissemination of ideas in the public consciousness about the different life chances of the bearers of this identity. This collision leads to the politicization of the Russian collective identity, as well as to the need to provide it with more solid ideological foundations in historical memory, in reproduction thanks to the education system.
