Abstract
The article, through the prism of historical sources, examines the measures taken by public administration bodies to work with the population in order to ensure reliable protection of the Belarusian-Ukrainian border. The process of evolution of the perception of the State Border of the Republic of Belarus in the public consciousness of the border population of the Brest and Gomel regions is shown. Some proposals are substantiated on the optimal balance between the interests of security and cooperation, the improvement of the legal mechanism for the interaction of border authorities with residents of the border area.
