Abstract

In this conference paper the research of the historical features, which formed modern civilizational space of citizens of Ukraine, was carried out. Throughout their existence, Ukrainians have been under the rule of neighboring states, such as the Russian Empire, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Grand Duchy of Moscow, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Crimean Khaganate, the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Prussian Empire. This imposed certain limitations on their survival values. Throughout their existence, Ukrainians adjust to the demands imposed from the outside. As a result, Ukrainian society in any empire was governed only by people who carried out the will of the respective empire. If one of the elites advocated secession, such an elite posed a danger to the empire and was removed from power, very often simply killed. As a result, there was a negative selection of Ukrainian ruling elites, which formed the principle of inferiority. Moreover, it was noted that for the development of the Ukrainian civilization space it is necessary to replace the values of survival with the values of development. It is also shown that at all stages of the existence of the young Ukrainian state there was a direct confrontation with Russia. Russia tried to influence Ukraine's internal and foreign policy. It has been shown that in Ukraine's attempt to finally move towards European values, there occurred a variety of inner and outer obstacles. The main steps to ensure the effective formation and preservation of the Ukrainian civilization space are discussed in the paper.
