Abstract

This paper presents the feature extraction of fault currents that are associated with temporary and permanent faults in a distribution system employing a multi-shot reclosing scheme. In order to extract particular features of the temporary and permanent faults, we utilized the root mean square (RMS) and total harmonic distortion (THD) information that can be simply and conveniently implemented in digital relay. From this we found that temporary faults are normally greater in comparison to permanent faults in the variation of RMS and THD. The results of this paper could be effectively utilized for implementing an adaptive reclosing scheme that could discriminate between temporary and permanent faults in power distribution systems.
