Abstract

This goal of this research is to study the feasibility of using aluminum SH- and MAO-coated cylinder liners (CL) in engine manufacturing. Aluminum CLs made of AK4-1 alloy with a hardened layer has been tested for endurance against standard St40X steel liners. It is shown that provided the cooling is sufficient, a transition to MAO- or SH-coated aluminum CLs the CLs working surface is 1.5 to 2 times more durable. The thermal condition of the cylinder-piston group parts has been modeled mathematically as if used with such CL; the modeling results presented herein. Despite the hardened layer having lower thermal conductivity compared to that of aluminum or iron alloys, the use of aluminum CLs with such coatings does not result in substantial temperature-related alterations in other sleeve assembly parts.
