Abstract

A proton linac plus synchrotron system was studied for the proposed Intense Pulsed Neutron Source (IPNS) at Argonne. An Alvarez H$sup -$ linac of 70 MeV and a high intensity fast cycling proton synchrotron to accelerate protons to 800 MeV will be the best choice to give a flux of 10$sup 16$ thermal neutron/sec cm$sup 2$ at the surface of moderator with a spallation neutron target of W or $sup 238$U.
