Thee main objective was to determine the potential benefits and challenges aasssociated with this service. To achieve this, a survey methodology was emmployed to collect data and assess the feasibility of the metadata service. TThe results of the study indicate that a metadata service would be a valuabblle e tool for cataloguing records in Tamil. However, the study also highlightss technical difficulties, such as internet connectivity issues, that may presenntt significant challenges in implementing the service. The study also idennttifies the need for computer literacy programmes for librarians beforee implementing the metadata service. Furthermore, the study concludes thhaat the introduction of a metadata service is unlikely to reduce cataloguing timme or the need for human resources. The study specifically offers valuable iinnsights into the potential benefits and challenges that arise from the introodduction of a metadata service in public libraries located in the Jaffna districtt.
