Abstract

Background: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK. Most women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50, but younger women can also get breast cancer. About 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. An increasing number of women with unilateral breast cancer are opting for removal of both the affected unilateral and contralateral 'normal' breast (contralateral prophylactic mastectomy, CPM) when otherwise suitable for breast-conserving surgery. A number of studies investigating trends in the surgical management of breast cancer in the USA and Europe have highlighted that younger patients are increasingly being treated by mastectomy.
